A Short History of Spain eBook Mary Platt Parmele
The book is noticeably dated, but it was written over a hundred years ago. Being none too familiar with the history of Spain before reading it, I found it a good primer for finding topics to delve into deeper in other works. Being short as it is, it is quick to read and raises more questions to someone wishing to learn the history of the country than it gives answers, but that is to be expected in a book attempting to convey the thousand plus year history of a land in 120 pages. In short, if you are looking for an in-depth history of Spain, complete with investigation of all the intrigue and controversy this land has accumulated, you may want to look elsewhere. If you are trying to get a rough idea or are just starting to familiarize yourself with this country's history, this is a good book. If nothing else, you can invest an afternoon in it and note topics to visit more thoroughly in other works. In all, an enjoyable read.

A Short History of Spain eBook Mary Platt Parmele Reviews
This book is a great read. It is easy to get through and gives a good concise timeline of Spanish history. I started studying Spain and found that many history books were referencing people or time periods I was unfamiliar with. This book helped fill in some of the blanks from the beginning of the Iberian peninsula to the beginning of the 20th century. After having read this and then moving back to more in depth history books on Spain, I now know what they are referring to especially regarding the time before the Moors. Some may not like it because it is not from this century, but I think that is all part of its charm.
This book has the history of Spain entangle in a world of metaphor that I cannot stand. The author likens the some events to spiders shedding their skin for example. That being said, it was free. So what did I expect. It seemed like the other was paid by word because there is so much crap around the information that you really want. It does give you a short history of Spain, if you can get through it...
A very readible quick history about Spain. The book is a bit old so some parts of the intriguing recent history are failing. But these kind of books give a very quick and dirty overview of the character of a country. It is a small book that could be a bit more detailed (hence the 4 stars). I would although recommend this book.
Such a book would be high on my list of history books for assigned reading. It is quite dated, having been written in the first few years of the twentieth century; yet, its concise descriptions of Spanish epochs and regencies is superb. I feel it omits nothing while failing, purposefully, to go into any great detail. If you are seeking truly to know the history of Spain, then read this short work. If you are more concerned with the history of Spain over the past 100 years, then don't read it as there obviously is none. Also, if you are more concerned with certain eras such as the Inquisition or King Philip's reign, then read a book written specifically for that purpose.
Very readable and accessible. Gives a good 30,000 feet survey of the important epochs in Spanish history. A good background for those needing a quick overview prior to doing more in depth study about Spain, or prior to a trip to Spain. Before reading this book I had not known the importance of the Visgoths in Spain nor the Spannish connection to Carthage and the Phoenicians. For anyone who lives in or has roots in North or South America, the influence Spain cannot be denied and a good understanding of it's history will serve them well.
I wish I had read the publication date (1898; new edition in 2016) before I read the book. The book has not been updated, so the material at the end of the book can be confusing, especially when talking about the USA as an enemy. I know nothing about the history of Spain, so I can't judge the accuracy, but it seemed to give a clear overview of the history into the late 1800's. I appreciated the earliest known history though the mid-1800's. It can be a good introduction for the complete novice of Spanish history.
This is, indeed, a short history. It is, however, well done. What I found must interesting is the author's reference to places and ruins in Spain, told from her perspective and in her times. I have traveled in Spain, and only wish I could have done so one huncred years earlier.
This history is incomplete, but not shallow. I have a good knowledge of Spanish history and have lectured on the subject. Still, I found this history well worthwhile.
